History
The Shinsengumi
After Japan opened up to the West following U.S. Commodore Matthew Perry's visits in 1853, its political situation gradually became more and more chaotic. The country was divided along various lines of political opinion; one of these schools of thought (which had existed prior to Perry's arrival) was sonnō jōi: "Revere the Emperor, Expel the Barbarians."
Out of the remnants of the Roshigumi who refused to return to Edo, the Shinsengumi was born. Matsudaira Katamori named three commanders: Kondô Isami, leader of the eight-man Shieikan faction; Serizawa Kamo leader of the five-man Mito faction; and Niimi Nishiki, another member of the Mito faction who was only a nominal commander and did not wield any true power. Kondô and Serizawa were fierce rivals and the tension between the two was reaching a boiling point. Kondô and his right hand man, Vice-Commander Hijikata Toshizô, began to plot the destruction of the Mito faction. Their first break came in early September 1863, when Niimi was found guilty of extorting money for use at the geisha houses and was forced to submit Seppuku. Serizawa's violent and unruly behavior gave Kondô the opportunity he needed to finish the job and seize sole power. As it was felt that Serizawa was soiling the group's reputation, Matsudaira Katamori, ordered the assassination of Serizawa and his closest cohorts. On September 16 or 18 (there isn’t clear agreement on the exact date), Hijikata, the gifted swordsman Okita Sôji and two other members loyal to Kondô assassinated Serizawa and Hirayama Gorô. A third assassination target, Hirama Jusuke, escaped. With the Mito faction broken, Kondô and Hijikata had absolute control over the Shinsengumi.
Tsubasa Naoe
As a fine swordsman, his teacher still was far better than he as a warrior. Bringing his attention to training alone, Tsubasa killed many during his childhood to live. Kyoto was the place his childhood friend Rai lived. He’d not seen him since his own parents had passed away due to illness.
The fever had taken them both, he’d found his friend in the house seeming unaware of things. He offered a hand to his childhood companion offering him freedom. Having made a goal to go train with the Honda clan to get his skills up, he decided couldn’t leave Rai alone. He took his friend to the Honda Estate where Rai would get training with the Legendary Ninja Hanzo.
Hanzo and Tsubasa weren’t close but had fought along the same side during a war, shinobi were impressive people. After a request from Tsubasa to train Rai in the art of Iga Ninja, the male accepted Rai as his pupil.
Tadakatsu and Tsubasa trained while Rai trained, each learning their craft. Balancing stones on his body and striking at key moments without losing the stones was part of Tsubasa’s training. As to the details of Rai's training, Tsubasa merely knew it was hard and tough. Remaining here for a long time years had passed. Tsubasa had grown to the age of 18 in those years.
Rai Shuno
Rai was found at the age of 8 in Kyoto, Japan, 1990 by Tsubasa Naoe, and was inducted later on into the Shinsengumi in 2001, at the age of 19. Together they both rebuilt the Shinsengumi, revitalizing the era of Samurai and leading on through the years. Rai's parents were killed while Rai lived with his aunt for the summer. The father had an extreme gambling problem, and lost a bet to a Japanese mafia syndicate. After not receiving the money, the Mafia came to the Shuno residence, and killed Rai's parents. After summer had ended, Rai came home to find his parents were dead, and locked himself away from 3 days in the house, where afterwards, he'd be saved by Tsubasa.
